Do you have undamaged, functional 8mm video reels that you want transferred to a more current format? Richmond Camera has over 80 years experience of handling your cherished memories. We can transfer your 8mm reels to a DVD (digital video discs) or USB drive, and then you can pick up your originals, plus your new digital media, in our store!

3-inch reels: $15/ea
5-INCH REELS: $45/EA
7-INCH REELS: $90/EA
Minimum order is $45.00.

  • Just drop off at our store, no appointment needed.

  • All work is done in-house, your originals do not leave our premises.

  • We accept 8mm, not 16mm. Measure the edge of the film with a ruler to see if yours is 8mm wide or 16mm wide.

  • If you select DVD as output, the DVD you receive is playable in a computer or a traditional DVD standalone player. It would NOT be in a single digital file format (such as MOV, MP4, etc.) but instead the same format as if you purchased a DVD movie off the shelf at a store. If you want a single digital file, choose USB instead.

  • If reels are undeveloped, blank or damaged, we will not convert them, and you will not be charged. If a reel provided to us is wound in reverse, it will not be converted.

  • By default, we combine footage onto a single DVD or USB, depending on the total amount of footage you provide to us. They will appear as a video with chapters (DVD) or a single movie file (USB), if you dropped off multiple items.

  • $10 for each extra DVD copy, $13 for each extra USB copy.

Frequently asked questions

  • Richmond Camera does not offer any form of previewing footage before converting it. That being said, you can use a 10x loupe. Be careful unwinding the reel a bit to use with a loupe, as you do not want the entire reel to unwind.

  • Richmond Camera does not edit camera footage.

  • It depends on the size of the reel, and whether the reel is full or not, but as an example:
3” reels average 3-4 minutes each
5” reels average 12-14 minutes each
7” reels average 26-29 minutes each

  • The vast majority of 8mm reels of film do not have audio capability. Do not expect audio. If your 8mm reel has an extra ‘strip’ running at the bottom of the film, audio capability would most likely have been present. However, simply having the audio strip does not mean that audio was recorded or is still salvageable.

  • If your reel of film looks warped, broken, frayed, or has a mildew odor, we would not attempt to convert the reel of film. We do not offer physical repairs to your video media.

  • Richmond Camera does not offer that as a service at this time.
